Rewild Desaru: Restoring Nature, Reviving Biodiversity
Rewild Desaru is an initiative committed to restoring ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity at Greater Desaru. This transformative project envisions a thriving sanctuary where butterflies, birds, and bees — essential pollinators and indicators of ecosystem health — can live, breed, and thrive in harmony with their environment.
In a time when natural habitats are increasingly under threat, Rewild Desaru stands as a beacon of hope and action. Through ecological restoration, education, and community involvement, the project aims to reverse habitat degradation, strengthen wildlife populations, and inspire a deeper connection to the natural world.
At the heart of this initiative is the belief that conservation is not just about protecting species — it’s about rebuilding ecosystems that sustain all life. By reintroducing native plant species, restoring green spaces, and creating pollinator-friendly habitats, we are laying the groundwork for resilient natural systems that will benefit both wildlife and people for generations to come.
What We’re Creating
Rewild Desaru focuses on developing rich, multi-layered habitats that support a wide array of flora and fauna. This includes the planting of native flowering plants, shrubs, and trees that provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for butterflies, birds, and bees.
Visitors and participants will witness the magical transformation of open landscapes into vibrant ecosystems. Imagine watching butterflies emerge from their chrysalises, hearing birdsong fill the air, and observing bees busily pollinating native blooms — each moment a reminder of nature’s beauty and resilience.
Progress So Far (June 2022–May 2023)
During the second half of 2023, Rewild Desaru made notable progress across four key pillars: conservation, restoration, education, and community engagement. Our work has been data-driven, collaborative, and deeply rooted in sustainability.
- Camera Trap Monitoring: Installed across various habitats, these tools recorded wildlife activity, offering valuable insights into species diversity and behavior.
- Bird Census: Carried out regularly to monitor avian populations, identify key species, and guide conservation strategies.
- Tree Planting Programs: Focused on reforesting degraded zones using native species to strengthen ecosystem connectivity and improve soil and water health.
- Seed Collecting Activities: Ensured a supply of local seeds for future planting, promoting genetic diversity and long-term ecological stability.
Together, these efforts are building a more resilient natural environment — not just for wildlife, but for the entire Desaru community
